The association now offers farmers a reporting and advice point for the first time, announced on Wednesday. This can be reached both online and by telephone. According to the information, it supports farms in the fight for fair compensation,

Fair Markets Switzerland (FMS) was founded in May by market and business experts and aims to combat market abuse. Founding members include agricultural economist and association president Stefan Flückiger and economics professor Mathias Binswanger.

FMS first looks at the agricultural and food markets because that is where the need for action is greatest. The association supports farmers who are suffering from the increasingly powerful wholesalers.

The goal of FMS is pricing that both avoids excessive consumer prices and achieves producer prices that, together with the subsidies, enable subsistence and sustainable agriculture with a reasonable income.

The issue of market power is coming to a head, President Flückiger said in the statement. Small and medium-sized buyers and suppliers of powerful companies are under increasing pressure.

FMS wants to provide insight into market disturbances for fair prices, because well-functioning competition is currently the exception rather than the rule. The problem is David versus Goliath.

In the agricultural and food sector in particular, the two major distributors Migros and Coop dominate the market and skim off excessive margins and profits due to their position. The Tamedia newspapers initially reported on the association and its activities.
