A National Council committee is calling for longer parental leave for mothers and fathers of multiple children. (theme image)

The committee passed its motion by 13 votes to 11 with one abstention, parliamentary services said on Wednesday. Representatives of the SVP and FDP reject the motion. Then the National Council decides on it.

The number of multiple pregnancies has risen sharply in recent years, the majority justifies the motion. Twin pregnancies often resulted in complications that can have repercussions well into adulthood. Parents also have more work to take care of their children.

Most of their requests are based on the recommendations of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Switzerland currently grants only the minimum maternity leave provided for in the ILO Convention, but is not implementing any of the ILO’s more comprehensive recommendations.
