Switzerland is making about CHF 5.5 million available for the reconstruction and establishment of about 30 Ukrainian schools. Some 15,000 schoolchildren must be given access to “dignified and safe” education.
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Monday that this money could be used to rebuild schools in the Chernihiv, Odessa and Poltava regions directly affected by the fighting. The plan is to set up secure multipurpose rooms in which education can take place undisturbed, even during an air raid.
In addition to the existing aid package
The CHF 5.5 million comes on top of a CHF 140 million aid package requested by the Federal Council in February 2023 and approved by parliament.
The amount will go to the project “Decentralization for improved democratic institutions” (Decide). According to the communiqué, it will be carried out in close cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Municipalities, Areas and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine and local governments.
