“Dolls against Ecopop”: Operation Libero distributed 30,000 condoms nine years ago to mobilize for a no to the Ecopop initiative. Now the political movement is once again resorting to contraceptives.

The reason is the 10 million initiative of the SVP Zurich. On Saturday, at a special party conference of SVP Switzerland, delegates unanimously voted to support the referendum, which calls again for a restriction on immigration. This time, the constitution should state that the population of Switzerland cannot exceed 10 million by 2050. The SVP itself speaks of the “sustainability initiative”.

Agreements with Ecopop initiative

The content and title of the initiative create a déjà vu in Operation Libero. The Ecopop initiative, which was voted on in 2014, also provided for a very specific limitation of population growth. “9 instead of 12 million Switzerland” was the slogan that adorned the voting posters of the yes committee at the time. The initiative was rejected en masse – also because it went too far even for the SVP.

“It’s exactly the same as Ecopop 2014, again they want to restrict immigration under the guise of ‘sustainability’,” said Sanija Ameti (31), president of Operation Libero. That is why the movement is now announcing “Dolls against Ecopop 2.0”. They want to hand out the pink condoms again, this time in front of the ZSC stadium in Zurich, where a big SVP festival will be held at the end of August to kick off the election campaign.

“Don’t Increase Xenophobia”

Ecopop wanted to limit the population in the Global South with education and the distribution of contraceptives. “Now the SVP wants to do the same in Switzerland, and we think: the SVP should start with itself and stop increasing its xenophobia,” Ameti said.

From the point of view of the GLP councilor from Zurich, the 10 million initiative is “extremely dangerous”. It is a “xenophobic wolf in durable sheep’s clothing”. You want to make that clear with the condom campaign. Operation Libero launched crowdfunding on Sunday to fund contraceptives. You need to get the 6,000 francs together quickly.
