The election campaign is in full swing – and the SVP is doing what it does best: provoking and crossing borders. On Thursday, the party posted a photo on Twitter showing Swiss soldiers praying for Muslims. The comment, “Now what? Child marriages, Sharia courts, stoning?”

The responses were not long in coming. On Twitter, commentators attacked the SVP head-on – but soon the FDP entered the picture as well. In the cantons of Zurich, Aargau, Zug, Basel-Landschaft and Jura, this list has entered into alliances with the SVP for the autumn elections. The result: those who vote for the FDP in those cantons sometimes help the SVP get a seat, which can have a deterrent effect on voters who are hesitating between the GLP and the FDP.

rejection from their own ranks

Sabina Freiermuth (58) is chairwoman of the FDP Aargau. She calls the SVP’s tweet “disgusting”. “Religious freedom is enshrined in our federal constitution.” When the Swiss do military service, she is grateful to them.

She does not answer the question whether the list connection with the SVP harms Freisinn. But according to Freiermuth, the SVP’s aggressive style is met with rejection even within its own ranks. “Even moderate SVP voters don’t appreciate that,” says the chairman of the cantonal party. “SVP colleagues of the Grand Council continue to apologize to me for this misguided political style.”
Freiermuth says he will contact the SVP and ask the party to exercise moderation. The president of the Zug Liberals, Cédric A. Schmid (43), made a similar statement. He called on the SVP to “discuss politics and stop denigrating people”.

List connections remain

In both cantons, the FDP sticks to the list of connections with the SVP. This is a purely arithmetic alliance, says Schmid. Freiermuth calls the behavior of the GLP and Mitte – who indicate that the FDP votes could benefit the SVP – “hypocritical”. In Aargau, the GLP entered into a list connection with the SP and the Greens. “So if you choose GLP, you also choose Left-Green and Juso.”

She was always against the tool of list connections, says the resident of Aargau. But: “As long as this remedy exists, parties must use it.”
