Carmen Walker Späh, economic director of Zurich, asks opponents of aircraft noise whether there are cantonal employees in their organization.

The civil organizations of the runway extension at Zurich Airport received an unexpected mail. A letter from the Zurich government fluttered in their mailboxes, as reported by the “Tages-Anzeiger”. The content: explosive.

The organizations are asked to disclose which of their members oppose the extension of the runway – especially those employed by the canton of Zurich. The letter was signed by Carmen Walker Späh, Economics Director of Zurich (65, FDP).

Letter based on request from common people

The stumbling block: a request from three middle-class, airport-friendly cantonal councilors to the government. It is a direct response to the airport donation scandal: Zurich Airport has been supporting parties with money for years.

With their advance, the citizens want to turn the tables, according to the “Tages-Anzeiger”. And find out how the financing of airport-critical organizations is doing.

Because the government does not have an answer to all questions, it has written to all interest groups that have something to do with the airport. One of the questions asked is: “Can people who are in the service of the Canton of Zurich and therefore have a duty of loyalty, take positions in public that are contrary to the position of the Canton of Zurich represented by the Council of Government?”

“Reminds me of North Korea”

In concrete terms, this means that people who work for the canton of Zurich and are privately involved in combating aircraft noise could soon end up on a government list. Only: hardly any organization will pillory its members against their will. Because the request from the Ministry of Economic Affairs was not well received by opponents of the runway extension, the “Tages-Anzeiger” writes.

For example, the Fair in Air Association describes the letter as an “inquisition letter”. Walker Späh indirectly demands that people in the public sector as well as private individuals must defend their own point of view for more air traffic and more damage to health, noise and the environment. This is reminiscent of North Korea.

Cantonal employees are allowed to expose themselves politically

Personnel law stipulates that cantonal employees may expose themselves politically as long as their views are not extremist and do not violate the duty of loyalty and due care.

Economic director Walker Späh has not yet responded to the letter. (Okay)
