The Swiss armaments group Ruag would have liked to resell Leopard 1 A5 tanks to the German armaments group Rheinmetall.

The Germans are not allowed to supply Swiss-made ammunition to Ukraine. Denmark is not allowed to pass on Swiss wheeled armored personnel carriers. Switzerland is currently not making friends in Western Europe.

On Thursday in the margins of the EU summit, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte (56) also expressed his disappointment with the Swiss tank decision. On Wednesday, at its last meeting before the summer holidays, the Bundesrat refused to return 96 Leopard 1 AS main battle tanks to the German manufacturer Rheinmetall.

“Hard to understand”

The idea would have been to repair the tanks currently stored in Italy in Germany and then re-export them to Ukraine. The Netherlands would have paid for the repair.

“To be honest, I was very disappointed and find it difficult to understand,” Rutte said when asked by a journalist. He was in “close contact” with the Swiss government. (SDA)
