The delta at Lake Uri is picturesque. There is currently a campground right on the lake.

Neither a marina nor hotels may be built in the Isleten area on Lake Lucerne. The Greens in the canton of Uri submitted a citizens’ initiative on Wednesday with which they want to thwart the plans of investor Samih Sawiris (66).

According to a party statement, the “Isleten for All” initiative was signed by 1,953 people. This requires a minimum of 600 valid signatures.

Marina, 50 hotel rooms and up to 100 apartments

Samih Sawiris, on whose initiative the once small resort town of Andermatt was developed into a resort, has angered sections of the population with his plans for marinas on Lake Uri. He gave up on the Flüelen project after fierce resistance, but continued his plans for the Isleten Peninsula.

Sawiris wants to build a marina, an artificial bay inland that can accommodate up to 50 boats. A maximum of 25 permanent boat places are provided. A hotel is also planned in the three or four star segment with about 50 hotel rooms and about 100 apartments managed by the hotel.

Once an important industrial site

So far, two petitions have failed to stop the Isleten project, so the Greens have launched a popular initiative. Therefore, the peninsula should be a publicly accessible and natural local recreation area. New boat harbors, hotels or apartment buildings should be banned. Camping must continue to be allowed.

The Isleten is located on a delta of the Isitaler Bach between Seedorf and Bauen on the left bank of Lake Uri. It was once an important industrial site. Explosives were produced there for over a hundred years at the Cheddite site, including for the construction of the Gotthardbahn summit tunnel. (SDA/sq)
