It’s a special occasion – after all, you don’t become Federal President every year. In an annually changing cycle, one of the seven federal councilors is elected “first among equals”. In 2024 that will be Viola Amherd (61, middle).
The election will take place at the end of this year by the United Federal Assembly. However, one thing is already clear: the canton of Valais will welcome Amherd on 21 December. The budget decided by the Walliser State Council is a maximum of 350,000 francs, reports the “Walliser Bote”. Even if it is not completely exhausted, it is considerably more than was spent on the festivities of the Federal President in recent years.
It is still unclear what exactly will happen with the money. Perhaps a few fighter jets will take off for the Federal President and Defense Minister and there will be Valais wine at will for the entire population?
Leuthard’s feast was also expensive
The party for Amherd’s fellow party member and former Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard (60) is in second place among the most expensive receptions in recent years. In 2017, the Canton of Aargau donated CHF 230,000 to receive its president.
This is followed by the celebration of the canton of Friborg for Federal Councilor Alain Berset (51), who will resign at the end of this year. The canton paid CHF 200,000 for the reception after its first election as Federal President in 2018. In the second election for 2023, they were slightly more frugal and spent only CHF 135,000.
The canton of Ticino issued 150,000 francs for the celebration of “its” Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis (62) in 2022. He is right in the middle.
SVP saves
It’s also much cheaper, as the SVP shows. The reception for Guy Parmelin (2021) cost the home canton of Vaud only 32,820 francs. And former Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer (72) even had to celebrate ‘kä Luscht’ in 2019. He completely missed the reception in the canton of Zurich.
The figures only show the expenses of the cantons. Donations for the receptions of any other donors are not included in the list. (sq)
