Will you soon have to pay if you want to drive south by car for a long weekend? The idea of a spinning top for the Gotthard is popular with the public. In a representative survey by Tamedia and “20 Minutes”, 69 percent of those surveyed are in favor of a tunnel charge.
As expected, approval is greatest among Green sympathizers. 82 percent of them are clearly or somewhat in favor of it. Closely followed by the supporters of the GLP, of whom 81 percent are in favor of the toll. This is 71 percent among SP supporters, 68 percent among those in the center and 66 percent in the FDP camp. And even of those who vote for the SVP, 58 percent are more or less in favour.
The greater the demand, the higher the price
Parliament will soon deal with the Gotthard toll. Uri Central National Councilor Simon Stadler (35), his GLP colleague Corina Gredig (35) from Zurich and Aargau FDP MP Matthias Jauslin (61) have jointly tabled a proposal calling for the introduction of a tunnel charge for the northern southern traffic requirements. The bigger the question, the deeper the drivers should dig.
The national councilors refer to neighboring countries, where toll systems on the crossings over the Alps have long been a reality. They are convinced that this will allow traffic to be better distributed and congestion to be reduced.
Given the senders from the centre-right camp, the initiative could get a chance in parliament. The clear results of the survey will serve as an argument for the supporters. (lha)
