The end of the year is over – Federal President Alain Berset (51) will no longer be eligible for a fourth term as a federal councilor in the autumn. The SP magistrate was popular with the people, but often controversial. In his twelve years as a federal councilor, he caused one or two scandals.

Probably the biggest and most fatal at best is the affair surrounding the so-called ‘corona leaks’. Now Berset and apparently other federal councilors have been questioned by the responsible subgroup of the Business Review Commission (GPK), writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”.

According to the article, Berset’s former head of communications, Peter Lauener, was also questioned. So far, no information has been made public about the content of these surveys.

What really happened?

The ‘Corona Leaks’ affair is about any indiscretions between Lauener and Ringier’s publishing boss Marc Walder (57). Lauener is accused of sharing sensitive information with Walder during the pandemic.

A proceeding by the federal special investigator, Peter Marti, has since been dropped due to lack of evidence. But the decision of the court of coercive measures in Bern on whether Lauener’s e-mails, which Marti had wrongly seized, are admissible for a lawsuit, is still open.

This in turn would have consequences for the course of the GPK, which, in contrast to Marti’s research, is not of a legal but of a political nature. The goal is to investigate Berset’s interior design department and see if Berset knew about the contact between Lauener and Walder.

Berset tied his fate to the leaks

Particularly explosive: At a meeting of the Federal Council in January 2023, Berset assured that he knew nothing about the alleged indiscretions between Lauener and Walder. Berset thus irrevocably linked his political fate to the case.

However, at the media conference about his firing, Berset claimed it had nothing to do with the affair. He declined to answer questions about the trial.

The outcome of the affair is still open. (sq)
