The Federal Council proposes the extension of the law in a preliminary draft regulation on tobacco products, which it sent for consultation on Wednesday.
The law, which was passed by parliament in October 2021, regulates, among other things, the composition of tobacco products, the warnings on the packaging and trial purchases. The regulation specifies the requirements for alerts, the obligations of companies and test purchases.
In addition, five new categories are introduced in the design. According to the announcement, these are so-called “similar products such as herbal products for heating, nicotine products for sniffing or tobacco-free products for hookahs”. They should all fall under the Tobacco Act. The Bundesrat justifies this with the constant changes in the market and consumer habits”.
The consultation lasts until October 12. The law and regulation are expected to enter into force in the summer of 2024.
