Who is running for office of SP federal councilor Alain Berset (51)? For once, the SP has a lot of time: the faction will not set the timetable until September, because Berset will not step down until the end of the year. How close or far the party is to candidacies will also depend on the constellation in the run-up to the elections. Likewise, whether more resignations from other parties will emerge.

The field is currently wide open. For many, it is still too early to throw their hats in the ring. Blick shows who is considering a candidacy or who has already withdrawn from the race.

you want

Secretly, many want to run for office. For now, however, no one is going up the branches. An official announcement of a candidacy is still too early.

You leave it open

Daniel Jositsch (58, ZH): “I will communicate in the coming days,” Secretary of State Daniel Jositsch explains to Blick. He was interested in this position not so long ago. “A candidacy is of course an issue.” Jositsch was already flirting with a candidacy for the Sommaruga successor – and got bogged down in a dispute with the party. That could be a disadvantage. For many comrades, the anger has not yet evaporated. However, as his party’s official candidate, he would have election chances well into the middle class camp.

Matthias Aebischer (55, BE): SP National Councilor Matthias Aebischer would also have ambitions for the office of the Federal Council. When it came to the Sommaruga successor, the former television man held back, which should now earn him a few points in the match. He is also quite moderate in his politics, which should earn him many votes in the bourgeois camp.

Jon Pult (38, GR): The Graubünden National Council has only existed for 38 years. But he could bring a breath of fresh air to the government. As chairman of the Alpine Initiative, the transport politician is also a well-known figure throughout Switzerland. However, he has only been a member of the National Council since 2019.

Beat Jans (58, BS): The district president of Basel was still politicizing in the National Council until the end of 2020 and is therefore no stranger to federal parliamentarians. It is quite possible that he will throw his hat in the ring for the Basel region after the candidacy of SP councilor Eva Herzog (61) failed last year. “Of course that would be a very exciting job for me,” he explains. In principle, however, he feels very comfortable in Basel. “That is why I want to decide together with my family whether I am a candidate to succeed Federal Councilor Alain Berset,” says Jans. “I’m taking the time for the summer break and will probably comment on it at the end of August.”

Eva Herzog (61, BS): The Basel Council of States does not rule out a candidacy. “I have plenty of time to think about it!” she writes to Blick. Last year she failed her candidacy. It is therefore quite questionable whether she will stand as a candidate again after the election defeat at the time. However, she could also benefit from a “compassion bonus”. In the end, Karin Keller-Sutter (59) was only elected by the FDP at the second attempt. However, it is more likely that Herzog will focus on the presidency of the Council of States, which she will take over in December.

Samira Marti (29, BL): In the Basel region, a candidacy of national councilor Samira Marti is also possible. However, it is more likely that she has aspirations for the chairmanship of the parliamentary group, which will be re-determined in September. Compared to Blick, she has not yet responded specifically to a Federal Council candidacy: “It will take a while.”

Flavia Falls (44, BE): The Bernese People’s Councilor Flavia Wasserfallen (44) is also certified as a Federal Councilor. She has decided not to run for Sommaruga’s successor. At that moment she came to the conclusion that the step to a candidacy “at the moment” was not right for her. She is running for the Council of States to defend the seat of the outgoing Hans Stöckli (71). Has the situation changed in the meantime?

Nadine Masshardt (38, BE): National Councilwoman Nadine Masshardt was already considered a possible candidate for Sommaruga’s successor, but she canceled early on. She is more ready for a position in the Bernese government. “I can’t answer the question about a candidacy today,” she tells Blick. “I will now calmly assess the situation in the summer.”

Min Li Marti (49, ZH): State councilor Min Li Marti does not exclude a candidacy for the time being. Essentially, she’s considering a candidacy, she says when asked. “It also very much depends on the circumstances and the line-up.”

Priska Seiler Graf (54, ZH): National Councilor Priska Seiler Graf is not out of the running yet. “The dismissal of Alain Berset came as a surprise to me. Like all my colleagues, I have to think about it this summer.” According to the Zurich security politician, who has been a member of the National Council since 2015, it is not as busy as midterm elections.

Fabian Molina (32, ZH): Fabian Molina, the National Council of Zurich, would still be a bit young for the Federal Council. Still, he’s not giving up for now. When asked, he explains: “I have summer holidays from mid-July and will think about it in peace.”

Christian Levrat (52, VR): Former SP head and current post-president Christian Levrat certainly has the format of the Federal Council. With him, a Freiburger would follow the Freiburger Berset. Depending on the situation, he may have a chance.

Roger Nordmann (50, VD): Group leader Roger Nordmann would also be an option. The native of Vaud has been a member of the National Council since 2004 and is one of the main pullers there. He has not yet ruled out a candidacy. He told the media on Wednesday that there was no time to ask this question. And all faction members should make corresponding thoughts.

Pierre-Yves Maillard (55, VD): Pierre-Yves Maillard, former government councilor and current national councilor and union leader, is a political heavyweight. He was already in the Federal Council race in 2011 and lost to Alain Berset. In the autumn, he will be a candidate for the Council of States with good chances.

You canceled

The timing of the announcement of Alain Berset’s resignation just before the summer holidays surprised many – including in the SP. Some people have to digest that first. The first cancellations will probably follow soon.
