The Federal Commission against Racism recommends including the subject of racism in the curricula of Swiss schools. (theme photo)

The EKR notes positive developments in teaching materials. For example, the term ‘Indians’ in teaching materials is replaced by ‘native Americans’, the committee writes about the study published on Monday. Certain teaching materials also refer to “colonial Switzerland”.

When textbooks deal with racism, it is presented as a historical or interpersonal phenomenon. Racism, as it is characteristic of social power relations, is not present. According to the committee, social ‘normality’ is presented in teaching materials as ‘rather homogeneously white’.

She recommends including the topic of racism in curricula. Racism must also be addressed in the education and training of teachers.
