The urns are ready. Soon the final ballots will be thrown in and counted. Will the Swiss people, as expected, accept all three proposals at the federal level? Or will there be a surprise?
Climate protection law
The Climate Protection Act could be the most likely surprise. This template is mainly about one goal: Switzerland must be climate neutral by 2050. The law is the first step to that end. Financial incentives are designed to encourage homeowners and businesses to switch to renewable energy and climate-friendly technologies. The federal government will spend a total of CHF 3.2 billion in funding for this.
SVP circles, on the other hand, have called for a referendum. According to her, the law would greatly increase the demand for electricity, which in turn would drive up electricity prices. Under the slogan “Electricity Guzzler Law” they fight against the bill.
OECD minimum tax
The second model is the OECD minimum tax. It states that companies with an annual turnover of 750 million euros or more must pay a minimum of 15 percent tax on their profits.
The yes camp argues that if the people voted no, taxpayers’ money would flow abroad. Because if Switzerland rejects the minimum tax, other countries can claim outstanding tax amounts.
However, if the bill is passed, 75 percent of tax revenue should go to the cantons and the rest to the federal government. The opponents are not satisfied with this distribution. The SP fears that the cantons where many large companies are located will benefit most – especially Zug, but also Basel.
Covid law
We are also voting on the Covid law – for the third time. The law allows the Federal Council to take certain measures to protect the population and the health system in case of emergency. This includes the import of medicines against serious Covid diseases, even if they have not yet been approved in Switzerland. The federal government must also continue to issue Covid certificates.
Parliament wants to extend these measures until mid-2024. However, critics of the Corona measures have taken the referendum.
