Victory at the legendary 24-hour race in Le Mans (F) is something like a tribute for every motorsport enthusiast. At just 23 years old, Swiss driver Fabio Scherer has achieved what so many people dream of all their lives: last weekend he won a turbulent race in the second highest LMP2 class.

Hardly back in Switzerland, the next triumph is already beckoning – the young driver is welcomed at the Federal Palace by the President of the National Council, Martin Candinas (42, center).

Reception at the Federal Palace

Candinas welcomes the newly crowned Le Mans winner and his parents to the office of the President of the National Council on Friday. There he congratulates Scherer on his success.

Is the Bündner Mitte politician a motorsport fan? Candinas answers this question: “I will only drive a bus occasionally”.

Nevertheless, the highest Swiss is very happy with the signed model of Scherer’s LMP2 car, which the driver gave him as a gift.

A particularly big motorsport fan is FDP national councilor Christian Wasserfallen (41), who is also present at the reception. The man from Bern likes to drive a fast lap on the circuit himself.

This is of course no comparison with the performance of the Engelberg driver, who had to give everything to win the 100th edition of the long-distance race steeped in tradition. Fabio Scherer completed the 115 laps of 13.8 kilometers each with a broken metatarsal bone.

“I knew something was broken in my foot, but I didn’t want to go to the doctor or I might not have been allowed to start,” Scherer told Blick at the Federal Palace.

He suffered a broken leg in the pit lane shortly before the race. A Corvette pilot ran Scherer over his left foot. But the young racer gritted his teeth – and it was worth it! He braved the rain and was not deterred by the loss of radio communication with his team in the decisive phase of the game.

Even days after his victory, Scherer is still full of euphoria: “The victory in the 24-hour race of Le Mans is something very special for every driver. Despite my pain, I am overjoyed.”
