The annoying scraping of the motorway vignette at the beginning of the year is over. They will also be available in electronic form from 1 August. On Friday, the Federal Council approved the necessary amendment to the corresponding regulation.

Since its introduction in 1985, road tax has been levied in the form of a sticker. Now you can also buy them digitally. In the future, motorists will be able to choose whether to use a sticker or an e-vignette for the use of national roads, as the Federal Council wrote.

price remains the same

Unlike the sticker vignette, the e-vignette is not tied to the vehicle, but to the license plate. Owners of license plate changes and people who buy a new vehicle during the year benefit from this.

The price of the vignette – whether digital or analogue – will not change. It still costs 40 francs. In the coming weeks, the federal government will inform you exactly how the e-vignette will be introduced and where it is available.

Introduction was controversial

The introduction of an e-vignette was difficult. In the summer of 2017, the Federal Council held a consultation on his idea. Due to the controversial results, the Bundesrat advocated in 2018 for the introduction of a voluntary e-vignette, which should be offered in parallel with the previous adhesive vignette.

The Bundesrat can abolish the sticker if its share of total sales falls below ten percent – that is, about one million units. This has been decided by the House of Representatives during the revision of the Road Tax Act, which will also come into effect at the beginning of August.

Checks are only carried out on a random basis

The way the e-vignette was controlled was controversial in parliament. Finally, the councils agreed that the federal government and the cantons should be able to carry out automated checks using fixed systems and mobile devices. These controls should not be permanent and comprehensive, but risk-based and random.

Fundamental criticism only came from the SVP during the parliamentary debate. According to her, it could be a first step towards mobility pricing.

The Bundesrat assumes that income will remain about the same as today. These amount to approximately CHF 360 million per year and are used for the construction, operation and maintenance of national roads. An increase in the vignette price to CHF 100 failed at the ballot box in 2013. (SDA/lha)
