What lingers here in the Federal Palace?

What looks like renovation is art.

For the past few days, an unusual installation has graced the facade of the West Federal Building. Only an inquiry with the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics (BBL) will clarify what is going on here. What is attached here in a somewhat inexperienced way to the office building of Federal Councilor Karin-Keller Sutter (58) is art in the building.

The sandstone-colored installation is a pattern for the artwork “Tilo” by artist Renée Levi. It will be installed next year in the tympanum above Parliament’s main entrance. It consists of 256 grooved sandstone colored ceramic plates that refract the light differently depending on the perspective.

But why were the tiles mounted on the west wing of Parliament? “To verify the desired effect, an original size sample was attached to the West Federal Building, which presented itself as a comparable location,” a spokeswoman said. The pattern remains there until the end of October.

Please avoid wanted art

The occasion for a new work of art at the Federal Palace is the 175th anniversary of the first federal constitution of 1848, which will take place next year.

The artist calls her work “Tilo”, in tribute to Tilo Frey (1923-2008), one of the first female national councilors in Switzerland. The Neuchâtel FDP politician had a mother from Cameroon, making him the first black parliamentarian. Frey was elected to the National Council in 1971, immediately after women’s suffrage and suffrage came into effect.

The CHF 500,000 art project was torpedoed by the SVP in the National Council last year. Lukas Reimann (40) filed a motion to cancel the art competition. However in vain. (you)
