With 28 votes in favour, 14 against and one abstention, the small chamber decided not to step in on Tuesday. The Federal Council’s indirect counter-proposal thus goes back to the National Council, which approved it in the fall of 2022 and made amendments.

Behind the biodiversity initiative is the supporting association “Yes to more nature, landscape and building culture”, which includes several organizations such as Pro Natura and the Swiss Foundation for Landscape Protection.

With an amendment to the federal constitution, the initiators want to oblige the federal government and now also the cantons to protect and preserve biodiversity and the landscape. They ask for more government money.

The initiative goes too far for the Bundesrat. At the end of 2020, he decided to contradict her with an indirect counter-proposal. (SDA)
