Bundesbern was shocked by two hacker attacks this week. A cyber attack on Parliament shut down the website and disrupted the mail system. The federal prosecutor’s office has opened criminal proceedings.

Just over a week ago, something even more serious was going on: unknown persons targeted the Bernese Oberland IT company XPlain and penetrated the system with so-called ransomware. The company has a number of federal authorities in its portfolio, including the federal police service (Fedpol).

Fedpol keeps a low profile

The country’s top law enforcement officials have explosive files and security-related secrets.

Several questions arise: how much of it ended up on the dark web? What has been stolen? And why is such a sensitive area being outsourced?

The authority of director Nicoletta della Valle (62) is taken on request and refers to the National Center for Cyber Security, NCSC for short. There you are in charge of the clarifications.

Turbulent times for the NCSC

What is certain is that the parliamentary detectives are now also interested in it. Alfred Heer (61) is chairman of the audit committee, the subcommittee responsible for the Ministry of Justice. He confirmed to SonntagsBlick: “We will put the matter on the agenda.”

Moreover, the NCSC finds itself in turbulent times anyway: the department is promoted to the new federal office and after a power struggle in the Federal Council switches from the financial department to the DDPS.
