Dam destroyed in Ukraine: this is how Switzerland helps flood victims

Dozens of towns and villages on both sides of the Dnieper were flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) reacted quickly to the partial destruction of the Kakhovika dam and the associated flooding, the authority confirmed in a report by the “SonntagsZeitung”.

The Swiss embassy in Kiev is currently being supported by two water, sanitation and sanitation (WASH) specialists from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA), who were already in the country.

Together with a Ukrainian WASH engineer, they would help find short and medium term solutions to mitigate the impact. Another SHA member is seconded to the UN and is involved in coordinating WASH measures with the Ukrainian water supply system operators.

The embassy in Kiev is currently supplying much-needed pipes and pumps to the water network operators above the dam. As a result, the water supply systems could also be operated at lower water levels. It also works with communities, local water network operators and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on plans to provide water treatment units and water tanks.

Many partner organizations funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (Deza) have adapted their activities to provide emergency assistance to people affected by the floods. The Swiss partner organization Partnership Fund for a Resilient Ukraine (Pfru) supports the local government of the city of Kherson in making water tanks, generators and boats available for rescue and mine clearance operations.

An accurate assessment of the effects and needs on site will only be possible in a few days. The EDA further writes that access to and aid in the region is made more difficult by displaced and washed-up mines.
