The government of Aargau would have such a school occupation at the Zurich canton school in Enge evacuated by the police.

The use of student protests by external groups and political representatives on the school grounds or even in the school buildings is not permitted, the government council wrote in its response to an interpellation by FDP councilor Adrian Schoop on Friday. He had asked a series of questions about “school occupations by climate radicals and violations of political neutrality”.

In principle, however, the cabinet wants to proceed pragmatically: people who do not belong to the school and who are not invited to podiums or other approved discussion meetings would be asked to leave the school.

No place for school professions

Any school occupation would not be tolerated. The school management chose an appropriate course of action – which starts with a conversation and ends with an eviction by the police.

According to the government council, a police evacuation would be initiated if, despite a de-escalating discussion and clear demands from the school management, lessons were endangered, students were harassed or property was damaged.

According to the government council, it is “a priori not clear from when obstructing traffic will lead to police action and how the costs will be dealt with, but it is a matter of discretion that arises in the concrete case”.

Podiums should not be one-sided

During climate protests, the school management seeks dialogue with activists regarding debates and discussions about the climate problem, the government council continued. Clear conditions would be set so that the course of events and order in the school could be observed.

To maintain the political neutrality of discussion events, activists are asked to organize them in a hostile manner and ensure a balanced spectrum of opinion. The responsibility for balancing the different opinions lies with the school management.

According to the government council, dealing with current, political subjects with often controversial subjects is part of this at canton schools. However, protest movements must not disrupt regular school operations and the political neutrality of the school must be guaranteed. (SDA)
