What a thrill! What a thrill! Facts first: Two professors with the right track record are writing a research paper with a boring title. The question posed by Katya Rost and Margit Osterloh is addressed to a civilized, educated audience: why are there so many fewer women professors than university professors, despite all the advancement of women? The University of Zurich commissioned the study. So everything is academic, sober, relaxed.

However, when the results of the study were recently released through the media, a howl erupted. Yes, it rages, roars, thunders and scolds, regardless of the reputation and health of the authors. Journalists, politicians and professors were constantly resented – and freely criticized according to the creed: shoot the carriers, ignore the message.

What is scandalous in a study based on data from the University of Zurich and ETH from 2006 to 2020 and a survey of 9686 people?

The most important finding is that women are not discriminated against in universities for recognition of their academic achievements (as are men). There are significantly fewer female professors than professors in female-dominated courses (veterinary medicine or psychology) because this is not a viable career option for all women. They love their job, but prefer to work part-time and are looking for a partner who also works part-time, albeit with a higher workload. Men in programs dominated by women certainly have similar views. The situation is different in courses dominated by men (electrical engineering or computer science). The proportion of female students roughly corresponds to the proportion of female professors. On average, women in male fields care more about their careers, 39 percent of them even want both a family and a 100 percent job – as do 44 percent of men in the same fields.

Scandal! Men and women are happy

So, research shows that men and women confidently do what they want, and not what others want them to do. This seems to be a real scandal for custodial critics. In fact, the merit of the two professors is that they made the results of the study publicly available. Such studies are the only way to objectify a highly ideological discussion. May there be more of these!
