I always said yes passion is a very bad adviser. Especially if it has political connotations or is caused by excessive hatred towards someone. I do not intend to argue against the fact that it is crime, both in Panama and in the region, is on the rise. Obviously we have to promote that rule which is aimed at fighting crime in all its forms. But let’s stop for a moment and think about that maxim “it is better to let ten guilty go free than to condemn one innocent”. They’ll think what I’m saying is nonsense, but find meaning in what I write here.
When there is no real political maturity in the country, as has been proven after the governments we have experienced recently, there will always be a danger that the president and his entourage will use this type of government to persecute their opponents and detractors. Imagine for a moment that slander and insultthen it was left to the interpretation of an official who “acts on orders”, and the closure of the media is repeated as in a dictatorship, since members of the ruling elite have sensitive skin and cannot tolerate criticism that could be translated into his moment. I remind you that many of us were victims imprisonment, exile, expropriation and even physical harm during that dark period.
But let’s not go that far. How is it possible that he inherent right to property is exposed to a misinterpretation of a provision of the caliber of “legal deprivation of property”. Suddenly, we again see how a foreign representative, whose own social problems have not been solved and which are many, is a fan on the same level as a minister. Creole State, approval of the specified norm. Oh my God! To draw attention,
Inquisitors of civil society. Are they willing to sacrifice the streak freedom based on confiscation of their property Who do they consider guilty of this or that crime and thereby fulfill the desire of all Panamanians that justice prevail? If so, then why not bring to the dock absolutely every official or politician who is suspected of corrupt acts. Let’s do it retroactively and let’s see how the distasteful will finally disappear legal state in which we live. For me, that is a bigger and more absurd risk. So why start it?
What must be done is to put the system into practice responsibility and transparency, in the performance of duties of any public official, including the president and members from National Assembly. Illegal enrichment must be prosecuted. Someone who has a decent salary cannot have more than one apartment and luxury vehicles overnight, while like beach houses and farms. Compliance with the asset declaration before and after public duty with command and jurisdiction is imperative. Non-compliance should have criminal consequences.
The media, as well as ordinary citizens, are called to make sure that those who rule us do not rob the state treasury for their own benefit. But even now, you must respect the suspect’s right to defend himself and confirm their innocence, if so. If someone is falsely accused, they will have the right to publicly restore their honor and name. We never lose sight of the fact that we are still imperfect human beings, even if we succeed in establishing, one day and once and for all, a true environment of zero tolerance to corruption.
