With this culture you’re losing trust

The head of the Bulach city police is said to have created an atmosphere of fear with his leadership style, and this is not an isolated incident.

Nobody criticizes the authorities. You obey orders without exception. Loyalty precedes competence. Anyone who dares to question these commandments in the city police of Bülach will be – there is no other way to say – will be destroyed. Consequences: Problems are no longer solved, let alone solved. How should the police develop? How is it supposed to strengthen the confidence of the population?

The Winterthur city police show that Bülach is not an isolated case. There, after two suicides, an investigative report revealed serious leadership deficiencies. The accusations are the same.

The Swiss police corps is far from the modern culture of error and leadership. The shortage is all the more striking given that in recent years, many authorities and institutions have carefully investigated cases of abuse, created accountability departments, and adopted a more modern corporate culture.

Nothing like this happened to the police. There is not even an independent reporting department familiar with police structures and guaranteeing confidentiality. This needs to be changed. Not only so that the police can file complaints, but also so that they receive support when they notice that images of a stressful operation no longer disappear.

Because police officers who feel supported by their superiors and who are mentally healthy will also be better able to do their jobs. We all benefited from this.
