Isabelle Garcia must step down

Eleven days after her election to the Zurich cantonal council, GLP politician Isabelle Garcia announced her immediate move to the FDP. Reason: You and your group would have split up.

It happens again and again that politicians alienate themselves from their own party. In this case, the problem is timing. If Garcia can no longer identify with her party, she should have known before the election. Now it looks like she wanted to capitalize on her label as a GLP politician in order to get elected. As a FDP politician, she would hardly have had a chance in her constituency, since the previous one ran there again.

Under these circumstances, Garcia’s actions amount to betrayal of the voters. They included the GLP list, believing that they were electing a GLP representative. The fact that the longtime politician has been on the top of the party list also leaves a stale aftertaste.

Garcia must be aware that their actions are unfair. She evades the question of whether she has deceived her constituents with her actions. She probably knows the answer herself. As she knows: the only decent thing would be her resignation. Voters have the right to have their will respected. And to accept representatives of the party that elected them.

However, Garcia must come to this conclusion himself. Hunting for “Step Back” posters like the ones recently put up in Zurich is also a sign of bad style.
