So VAR is meaningless.

No Superleague round goes by without discussing VAR. They increased again in the second half of the season. The league and the association should review the course of action as soon as possible. Because in this form, the video assistant referee makes little sense.

The VAR system was introduced in 2018 to make football more fair. Obvious wrong decisions – in the case of penalties, goals or expulsions – must be prevented by viewing the television picture. An airbag for judges, so to speak.

Superleague has long said goodbye to the original idea. Too often video referees in Volketswil intervene over the radio and ask the referees on the field to re-check the decision.

Decisions that leave room for interpretation are canceled – in the video room, even if the referee in the stadium makes the final decision. Almost every touch of the ball with your hand is now counted as a penalty. The anger among the players, coaches and fans is understandable, the confusion is great.

Frequent VAR interference relieves the referee of some of his responsibility on the field. It is not right. His solution should also apply in the VAR era. And it can only be undone if there is a clear error. Small consolation is that in other leagues weekend after weekend there are heated debates.

This time, FIFA serves as a role model. VAR was moderately used at both the Russian 2018 World Cup and Qatar 2022. This did not prevent all errors, but kept them to a minimum. Discussions were rare. This should be the goal. Because only then does VAR really make sense.
