We must take care of our education system, because education is the only raw material for Switzerland. What seems obvious is actually not so. Anyone who listens to education experts will understand that our primary schools are in urgent need of reform.

If we stick with the system of separating children into different grades after Year 6, we will cause huge economic damage. Because about four children in the class are assigned to a level that is too low. This means that they will not be able to develop their potential – and will not become those skilled workers that our country lacks.

This is how school works without grades

Incorrect selection in primary school damages the individual for life. For us as a collective, committing to this system means an estimated loss of welfare of up to 30 billion francs per year, or, to put it another way: about eight times what the federal government spends on agriculture every year. Who can be against correction?

We all went to school and think we know what school is. Evidence-based and proven reform ideas are not just newfangled things, they also help our primary schools, children and young people move forward. We should all be interested in this.
