ETH Zurich alone should save 50 million francs.

While traveling in Switzerland, Goethe discovered granite and gneiss. He found no other raw materials. When Einstein studied at the institute that later became ETH, he found better research conditions in continental Europe.

Austerity measures like those threatened by federal universities are dangerous. Investments in education and research promise the most sustainable returns. The chaos in the army shows how billions of taxes are being burned. On the other hand, investments in learning pay off throughout your life.

ETH is a university that can compete with Harvard and MIT, Oxford or Cambridge. The universities of Lausanne, Basel, Zurich and Bern also attract researchers from all over the world. This location advantage needs to be expanded, not diminished.

From kindergarten to doctorate: more investment in education and research is needed. In Pisa studies, Switzerland does not rank as well as one would expect from one of the richest countries, and the shortage of teachers shows that their profession is not given the respect it deserves. The fact that cantonal universities also have to cut corners adds to the educational problems. It is outrageous that the Swiss National Science Foundation is forced to agree to cut costs by 25 million francs.

2023 was the year Switzerland went all out for banks. 2024 should be the year of education and research. Sunday’s speeches praising education and research as the most important raw materials must be followed by action on Monday. Science Minister Parmelin and Finance Minister Keller-Sutter, act!
