“Safety is also a woman” is the advertising slogan of the Swiss army. Now the head of VBS has to reformulate the motto: “Safety is not guaranteed.” Viola Amherd has lost control of her financial planning, and the Swiss army is only partially prepared to defend itself.

A year ago, Amherd said: “The Army can use additional financial resources to close gaps in its equipment, and do it sooner than planned. It increases defensive ability and endurance.” Now the public knows: these were empty words! National defense lives on credit.

Switzerland missed the turning point. The head of the army publicly declares bankruptcy: “We are temporarily losing the army.” It seems that the blenders are made specifically in Switzerland, which is known for its accuracy and reliability.

The defense minister and her army chief did not mention the financial hole by name during the budget debate in December. Otherwise they would probably get more money. But the constant smile of the Sun Queen of the Upper Valais calmed the parliament. National and state boards could have known better and prevented financial policy sleepwalking.

Fair-weather judge Viola Amherd would rather fly to Estonia and Norway than face problems in Bern. It’s time for her to do her homework. We cannot afford any more sleepwalking in security policy.
