Switzerland is a master of glorifying the past and ignoring reality. In Albisgütli, the SVP glorified a Switzerland that never existed: an island of the blessed, having nothing to do with the world’s problems. However, in Davos, Federal President Viola Amherd took charge and showed Switzerland as a country that invites peace negotiations and scores points as a mediator in the diplomatic arena.

Although the SVP argues that this is only possible with purist neutrality, countries from Norway to Qatar demonstrate the opposite. Although Norway is a member of NATO, the country is considered a serious dialogue partner for all parties. Although Türkiye and Qatar fiercely defend their geopolitical interests, they are sought-after mediators.

Neutrality and rapprochement with NATO are not a contradiction, but rather an agenda. Viola Amherd should aggressively formulate her secret plan to bring Switzerland closer to NATO.

Under the leadership of Senior Vice-President of the Federal Council Adolf Augie, Switzerland joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace in 1996. Now the central judge must ensure Switzerland’s participation in NATO military exercises simulating a Russian attack on Europe. She can easily accept problems with the SVP and the left, because it is about the security of Switzerland. Good poll results give the VBS boss charisma, which she can use as a political asset. Go ahead, Mrs. Amherd!
