Comment on the Sutter explosion in St. Gallen: Huppi’s steady hand

The management duo no longer work together: Matthias Huppi and his St. Gallen no longer rely on Alain Sutter as sporting director.

The New Year starts with a bang. But it rumbles not in Basel, Lucerne or Valais, but in St. Gallen. In recent years, under the leadership of president Matthias Huppi, the eastern Swiss team has become a model club in the league and – at least outwardly – an oasis of well-being.

The identity is as surprising as the location of the explosion. Alain Sutter, together with Hyppy and coach Peter Seidler, bear the main responsibility for getting Switzerland’s oldest club back on track, both financially and sportingly, after difficult years under Hyppy’s predecessor. Contrary to the usual industry mechanisms, the triumvirate stuck together even in difficult moments. Or as Huppi puts it: “Not a single piece of paper fits between us.”

Having decided to break up with his long-time friend, the former TV presenter shows toughness. Sutter was not ready to share the responsibility of leadership in the sports field. The division is a logical consequence. The decision underscores that there is no place for sentimentality in the football business – even in St. Gallen, although Hüppi clearly found the move difficult. FCSG is “not a pink planet,” the president said. He definitely hasn’t been like this since Wednesday.
