Complaints file of representatives in Panama

In this article, we will analyze in detail the responsibility of representatives in resolving complaints against the president and judges of the ZSS and investigate how the perception of independence of representatives can affect the outcome of submitted complaints.

In the Republic of Panama, the legislature plays a key role in the country’s democratic system. Deputies, members of the National Assembly, are elected representatives of the Panamanian people and have a number of responsibilities that focus on legislation and state administration.

Functions of representatives and their influence on the political life of the country:

Legislative function of representatives

The primary function of representatives in Panama is legislative. As representatives of the people, they have the responsibility of proposing, debating and approving laws that regulate various aspects of life in the country. This includes laws on topics such as the economy, education, health, justice and many others. Laws are the backbone of society and guarantee order and justice.

Lawmakers present bills based on the needs and concerns of their constituents. These projects are reviewed and debated in the National Assembly before being voted on. The adoption of a law requires the consensus of the majority of representatives present, which encourages dialogue and cooperation between different political parties.

Administrative function of representatives

In addition to the legislative function, representatives also have an administrative function. This includes approving the budget and appointing certain public positions. Through oversight and political control, MPs have the responsibility to ensure that the Government works efficiently and transparently. This aspect of their work should ensure accountability and prevent corruption in the Government.

Relationship with the executive power

The relationship between the legislature and the executive is a fundamental part of Panamanian politics. Sometimes there can be tension or disagreements between the National Assembly and the President. However, it is important to emphasize that representatives have the responsibility to act in the interest of the state and its citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.

Until now, there have been criticisms in this Government about the lack of independence of representatives when it comes to complaints or investigations related to the president and/or judges of the CSJ. In such circumstances, the perception is that there is a lot of political influence on decision-making because all the complaints presented were filed by the representatives.

It is essential to remember that independence and impartiality are essential in any country’s democratic system in order to guarantee trust in the political system.
