So now also SVP! In the title of its latest initiative, the party uses the word “sustainability” – a key term for environmental protection, although the referendum is about migration. Call it a blatant misnomer or a sly move, the fact is that today’s use of “sustainability” is inflationary.
Hardly any other term has experienced such a boom in recent years. Anything that wants to look good is called sustainable, from vegetables to furniture to investments. From 2020 to 2022 alone, the mention of the word “sustainable development” in German-language newspapers increased by more than 50 percent.
It has long since become a background noise that people no longer perceive. And when they hear it, they don’t believe it. Because the term “sustainability” is often used to wash away the red bleeding wound that corporations have inflicted on nature with their actions.
Social rethinking is needed – in words and in deeds. Why not prevent and avoid trauma and then engage in plaster politics? After all, the future belongs to companies that do not even cause damage, which they then have to compensate for in an effective advertising way.
