“The more people vacation together, the less antidepressants are prescribed.”

holidays! But only in some cantons. This is sad, because the more people relax together, the less antidepressants are prescribed.

The study that proved the healing effect of collective experience is Swedish in origin, perhaps not by chance. Maybe we could learn something from the Swedes in this regard, because according to the current World Happiness Report, they are happier than we are.

For example, the Swedes have “Fika”. “Fika” is obviously more than just a coffee break with a cinnamon roll because it’s a coffee break with a cinnamon roll. “Fika” can be held in a green spacious park or in an air-conditioned office, but not alone. Every day there comes a moment when all the employees get together and chat over coffee and sweets. Meetings are optional. But if someone is not involved in discussions about everything and nothing, ebb and flow, children, childlessness, electricity prices, vacation plans, late trains, knitting patterns, and maybe also about work, then some eyebrows are noticeably raised. Maybe some people need to be forced to be happy?

In any case, a synchronized recovery time is more efficient than an unsynchronized one. Terry Hartig, head of research and psychologist at Uppsala University, argues that what applies in everyday life applies even more to holidays and even retirees, and in this context he speaks of “collective recovery.”

It is clear that it could be more fun to watch five of us from a bridge in Venice than to be surprised alone as a ship flies out from under the bridge, a garden shovel on the deck, a garden shovel goes, why, where? Fractured relationships are easier to mend if friends and family are also committed to getting off the hamster wheel together for a while. It also makes sense that it’s easier to relax when you know that the home office is empty and that no one can object to your work, that colleagues do not respond to backlog of e-mails, and that no one is doing anything. Everything will be fine.

Ursula von Arx almost always travels in company. Even if she regularly dreams of being alone on a lonely island or in an unnamed city. Von Arx writes to Bleek every second Monday.
