superheroes like Spider-Man, Wolverine and Daredevil, among others, are a little more orphans. He passed away this Monday at the age of 93. John Romita, one of the comic book artists who helped strengthen and develop the superhero fantasy genre. He worked in two main houses, DC comicsand above all, Miracle.

Born in 1930 in Brooklyn, after graduating from the School of Industrial Art in New York he started working in the field of advertising. In 1951, he began cooperation with Stan Lee at Marvel, then known as Atlas Comics. After a few years, he went to the competition, DC, to return to Marvel in the mid-sixties. In Marvel, with whom he collaborated Jack Kirby and has worked on hit characters such as The Avengers, Daredevil and Spider-Man. Romita was responsible for designing and placing the face mary jane watson, Spider-Man’s wife. The Fantastic Four, Captain America, Wolverine – of which he co-created -, Bullseye and Luke Cage were other characters who benefited from his mastery.

He retired in 1995 with his last job as Spider-Man, in which he faced off against his nemesis the Kingpin, although he appeared in a special anniversary edition of Spider-Man’s adventures a few years later. It was around this time that he was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

Romita was the father of superhero cartoonist John Romita Jr., who announced the artist’s death on his Twitter account.
