Karin Keller-Sutter advocated the implementation of the OECD minimum tax at the SRF political program “Arena” on Friday evening.

The impending vote on the introduction of the OECD minimum tax seems to upset politicians’ priorities – as happened with the SRF political program “Arena” last night.

While conservatives and representatives of the center vigorously campaigned for yes, the left-wing camp sharply criticized the bill. The bottom line: Three quarters of future additional income should stay in the cantons. Opponents fear that this will primarily benefit wealthy cantons and cantonal residents.

“I wouldn’t hit the reset button”

Accordingly, SP Vice President Jacqueline Badran (61) has called for a new implementation of the 15 percent minimum tax that has already been adopted for the world’s largest companies. So you’re going to restart the whole process? Pressing the reset button?

First of all, Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) didn’t want to know anything about it, and when asked by the moderator Sandro Brotz (53), she drove her party and Federal Council colleague Ignazio Cassis (62) into the car. “I wouldn’t hit the reset button. That didn’t go well,” Keller-Sutter said.

Argument comes, first of all, at the expense of the partymate. Cassis is the face behind the Swiss government’s unsuccessful negotiations on a framework agreement with the EU. For seven long years, the Swiss and EU delegations negotiated the framework for future cooperation. In May 2021, the Federal Council unilaterally stopped the negotiations. Cassis later had to be hired as a scapegoat, and criticism came even from within his own party at the time.

Polls predict a clear yes

At odds with the international community and companies, Keller-Sutter wants to avoid this as much as possible. His comrade in arms in the arena yesterday, GLP President Jürg Grossen (53), warned of “the risk of funds flowing abroad”. The current template provides legal and planning security to large companies.

According to a Gfs poll conducted in mid-May, the majority of the Swiss population sided with Keller-Sutter and Grossen. 84% of respondents want to approve the proposal by June 18. For Keller-Sutter, digging might not have been necessary to remind his fellow party member Cassis of his public disgrace. (ste)
