Everyone on Tinder is looking for fast sex or big love. But lately you can also find Swiss on the dating platform. The airline advertised on Tinder to find new flight attendants.
«World wide match. Become a cabin crew.” If you swipe right – that is, give a “like” – you’ll come to the website and can apply directly to the job. Are there too few flight attendants in Switzerland like last summer when flights had to be canceled as a result?
Switzerland wants to hire 1,000 flight attendants
“We currently have enough cabin crew for the summer. Swiss media spokesperson Silvia Exer-Kuhn said, “We have been planning flight volumes for this year with 85 percent of 2019 capacity for some time on demand.”
Swiss is looking for cabin crew for next year to be able to return to pre-corona level. They want to hire a total of 1,000 new flight attendants by the end of December. More than 750 new flight attendants have been hired to date. “We are very pleased with the applications, the summer courses are fully booked except for a few places.”
Target audience: young adults
Why does Swiss place ads on Tinder, among other things? “Tinder has several hundred thousand monthly users in Switzerland. We can use this channel to reach an audience of young adults in particular,” says Exer-Kuhn.
This makes sense, because mostly younger people are on Tinder—the age group where flight attendant jobs are of particular interest, as they oscillate between education and career. “A Match Made in Heaven” so to speak.
Bad atmosphere in the cabin
But working on clouds has lost some of its brilliance in recent years. Young stewardesses are increasingly complaining about the increased workload, the compatibility of work and private life, and the low starting fee of CHF 3,200. At the beginning of the week, the cabin crews union (Kapers) terminated the collective bargaining agreement (GAV) as of the end of April 2024. Main demand: significant wage increases for young and old.
Exer-Kuhn says there is no connection between these events and the Tinder ad: “A flight attendant’s job is very diverse. The daily lives of our flight attendants are as diverse as our destinations and guests.» Swiss is also a testament to this: there are currently more applicants than career changers looking to re-acquaint with something completely new.
