2023 health insurance premiums are higher than they’ve been in a long time – 6.6 percent. For this reason, many insured individuals have exceeded their household budgets and have changed their primary insurer. This has led to historic changes in the market, as determined by the Comparis comparison service. The addressee of the sudden increase in premiums is KPT. Basic insurance broke the record with 195,100 additional people!

According to Comparis, since the introduction of compulsory basic insurance in 1996, no health insurance company has suddenly recorded such a large increase (+54.6%).

First of all, KPT has managed to gain many customers from Assura and Atupri. This had consequences for the Bern cash register: KPT CEO Thomas Harnischberg (60) had to warn customers about quality losses! It asked for “tolerance” and “understanding” if we couldn’t always meet our temporarily high quality standards. This is not surprising: in normal years, the flow of new policyholders is five percent to a maximum of ten percent.

Two industry leaders are losing

“As premiums increase, more insurers are replacing health insurance companies,” comments Felix Schneuwly, Comparis health insurance expert. “Secondly, it leads to greater volatility in premiums because health insurance companies with a large increase in customers and few reserves the following year have to raise their premiums more than the competition.”

insurer insured difference from previous year percent change
KPT 552,600 195’100 54.6
Group Mutual 1’007’500 67’500 7.2
sempani group 239,200 32’600 15.8
Swica Group 880,000 25’000 2.9
Visana Group 644,200 15’500 2.5
CSS 1’502’400 -10’800 -0.7
Atupri 152’500 -40’500 -2.1
Helsana 1’420’000 -84’000 -5.6
Asura 812’000 -89’000 -9.9

At the other end of the table is Assura from Pully VD. Biggest loser that year. 89.000 insured canceled their basic insurance with Assura. “Assura has for years been the health insurance with the lowest basic insurance premiums almost anywhere. However, there is no point in hunting for good risks any more,” says Schneuwly.

The reason: Cash registers with many healthy customers have to pay for risk equalization, while competition with many sick customers get money from the risk equalization pot. “Therefore, Assura has to invest more in service quality to stop customer churn,” says Schneuwly.

Helsana also had to lose her feathers. After CSS lost 84,000 policyholders and lost 10,800 customers, it remains by far the No. 2 in the industry.
