For almost exactly 50 years, the free use of cannabis has been one of Amsterdam’s main attractions, along with the infamous red-light district. But Amsterdam authorities want to clear it up.

In the heart of Amsterdam, smoking has been prohibited since 25 May 2023. However, only on the open road. The sale and consumption of soft drugs is still permitted in coffee shops. Anyone caught outside with a joint now faces a fine of 100 euros.

Alcohol consumption is also restricted

Authorities had already stopped free alcohol consumption. On weekends, after 16.00, the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited outside the restaurants. The city has also shortened the opening hours of bars in the red light district.

The ban is a precaution against problems caused by mass tourism. The old town should become more livable again and more attractive to other tourists. Residents have been complaining about people drinking and smoking marijuana on the streets of Amsterdam for years.

Fewer visitors now?

The question now is whether the prints will make Amsterdam less attractive to many tourists. As early as three years ago, authorities began assessing whether Amsterdam would still be a worthwhile travel destination if the screws on partner and sex offerings were tightened. In the category of men aged 18 to 35, “bags and boobs” were important when choosing Amsterdam as their travel destination for 65 percent of respondents.

Amsterdam city officials were not deterred by this. The congested city center needs to be less crowded and tourists better behaved, a situation where free cannabis and alcohol consumption is not conducive.
