In a survey, 90 percent said they would prefer Swiss agricultural products, the Federal Office of Agriculture (FOAG) announced on Thursday. They pay attention to their local origin, especially when buying eggs, milk and fresh dairy products.
They state that the most important reason for this preference is that the transportation routes are short. Compared to the last survey two years ago, they are more price conscious – inflation is likely to contribute to this.
Attitudes towards agriculture remain positive. Confidence in agriculture is highly stable. Farmers perceive the consumer side as entrepreneurial and up-to-date.
For the first time, FOAG also asked about their eating habits. More than half of those surveyed think that shopping and consumer behavior have a positive impact on the environment. They cite the consideration of local products as a reason.
Those who think that their eating habits affect the environment negatively, primarily attribute this to excessive consumption of meat and other animal products.
Basically, respondents describe an eco-friendly diet by purchasing and consuming seasonal and regional foods and avoiding food waste. Nearly three quarters also offered to publicly declare the climate and environmental impact of food.
The market research institute Demoscope conducts the survey on behalf of FOAG every two years. In 2023, between 6 and 20 February, 1061 people were interviewed in German and French speaking Switzerland.
