Fine cooking oils, liqueurs, specialty spreads or pastas in glass bottles: Vom-Fass branches are particularly popular for gifts. Reader reporter Manuela Reinhardt (52) from Balsthal SO was also given a 100-franc voucher for the Vom-Fass-Shop in Solothurn years ago.

But when he wanted to use it recently, he was bitterly disappointed. The coupon is no longer accepted. “The branch has a new owner and old coupons from the previous owner are no longer accepted,” says Reinhardt. The ownership change took place three years ago, as the branch confirmed to Blick.

This applies to job change

Also, coupons are not redeemable at all barrel stores. Because the delicatessen chain is organized in the franchise model. This means that each boss keeps his own account. “And coupons are only inherited when the owner changes, when the new owner of a business takes over the business with all obligations,” says Sara Stalder, 56, executive director of the Consumer Protection Foundation. This does not apply to the tap shop in Solothurn.

Tip from the expert

For two years, the branch managed to close old coupons with its predecessor, as it continued to manage a branch in Lucerne. However, this is no longer possible as he has since left as well. “There’s nothing you can do in these situations,” says Stalder. “When it comes to coupons, it’s important to use them right away and not risk leaving them in the drawer or past their expiration date.” A reminder might also help.

Coupons are valid for a very long time

But even though the Vom Fass branch is still run by its former owner, Reinhardt’s voucher was probably unlucky: Small vouchers for clothes, books, groceries or restaurant visits expire after five years. And the date of the 100 franc coupon at Vom Fass is already 2016 – no expiration date is listed. Coupons for larger amounts for travel or hotel accommodation are valid for ten years.

This applies for shorter periods

But companies usually issue their coupons with a validity period of one, two or three years. “But that’s not allowed. A coupon’s expiration date earlier than five or ten years is not binding,” underlines consumer advocate Stalder. However, on shorter terms, gift recipients may mistakenly think their coupon has expired. It directly recommends that you have adjusted shorter deadlines when you buy coupons.
