We can’t get enough of digitization: thousands of movies and millions of songs, thanks to the internet, which can be accessed at any time with our mobile phones, access to documents and photos from anywhere. But all this is costing us dearly. Because WLAN and cloud are not free. There are also paid subscriptions to play games. Blick calculates how much a digital life costs per month, excluding device prices.

movies and serials

Netflix subscriptions cost between CHF 11.90 and CHF 24.90 per month. Netflix subscription can now be legally shared with different households – but at an additional cost of CHF 5.90. With Disney+, you can save 12.90 francs per month and 15 percent with an annual subscription. Monthly subscriptions for movies and series are also available from Amazon Prime (CHF 9.99), Apple TV (8 CHF), Paramount+ (12 CHF), and Sky (9.90-19.90 CHF).

But there are streaming services not only for movies and series, but also for sports. It must be paid for separately. There is Sky Sports for CHF 19.90 per month. With Dazn you pay CHF 24.99 per month, you save even more with an annual subscription. BlueSport subscription is the most expensive at CHF 29.90 per month.

Music

Music and podcasts until your ears pop: Spotify has CHF 12.95 per month. But there is also a family subscription of 20.95 francs for up to six accounts and even a student subscription of 6.49 francs. Apple Music has a family subscription of five: for CHF 21.90, the individual subscription is CHF 13.90.

play a game

You can download unlimited games with Apple Arcade for 6 francs a month. They have Playstation subscriptions for CHF 9.90 to 18.90 per month. These can also be purchased for three or 12 months, then you’ll save some money. At Nintendo, you pay CHF 5.60 per month for a subscription or CHF 28 for the full year so you can play online as well. There is a family subscription with up to eight accounts for CHF 49 per year.

You should also be careful with in-app purchases. The app will actually be free. But if you want to progress faster in the game or collect coins, for example, to buy power-ups, you will quickly leave real money behind.

If you want to access your data anywhere and anytime, you have to pay for a certain amount of data. Up to 5 GB of storage is free with iCloud from Apple, you pay 1 franc for 50 GB, 3 terabytes for 200 GB, and 10 francs for 2 terabytes. Google One is about the same price as 2 francs for 100 GB, and 10 francs for 2 TB. With Google One, you have more free storage with 15GB.

Dropbox provides the most storage. But the subscription costs more too: 5TB for CHF 12.90 per month. Storage is unlimited from 21 CHF.

Internet and TV subscription

Home digital TV and Internet subscriptions are also required. Combining them can save some money. Teleboy has a combination subscription starting at CHF 37.90. With Salt, the subscription costs 49.95 francs – but at this price there is only slow internet. Sunrise and Swisscom offer combined subscriptions for CHF 89.80. Sunrise already has the fastest internet for that.

mobile subscription

Mobile phone subscriptions with a 1 GB data package are available, for example, at M-Budget or Yallo, starting at 10 francs per month. Flat rate subscriptions are also available, starting at 9.95 francs on GoMo or 15 francs on Teleboy.

But most probably pay more for their subscriptions. A flat rate subscription with Salt, Swisscom or Sunrise can go up to CHF 89.90. You can still save some money if you combine your cell phone subscription with Internet and TV.

Serafe

Radio and television are not free, but cost CHF 335 per year in a private home, that is, almost CHF 28 per month. However, this is not a voluntary contribution.

output for monthly cost
streaming services 12 francs
music subscription 13 francs
play a game 10 francs
cloudy 3 francs
Internet and TV subscription 65 francs
mobile subscription 50 francs
Serafe 28 francs
TOTAL 151 francs

If you add them all up, a person pays about 150 francs a month for their digital life. Of course not everyone has a subscription everywhere, after all, not everyone plays video games or needs a streaming service for sports. All in all, this is a reasonable amount for digital living. Therefore, it is worth using family subscriptions in your own home. Or share subscriptions.
