SBB is more expensive than its foreign competitors, according to research

Travelers pay SBB much more for city trips at Pentecost than abroad. This is demonstrated by a study of price differences in rail connections from Switzerland to cities in neighboring countries. (archive image)

According to research published Tuesday by the Wise technology group, the price difference between SBB and related rail companies abroad is on average 7 percent. Vienna travelers save the most. A short trip from Zurich to the Austrian capital is about 17 percent cheaper with the ÖBB.

For a trip between Berlin and Basel, Deutsche Bahn gets travelers 3 percent cheaper. And on a trip to the fashion city of Milan, less than 3 percent can be saved with Italian competition. The same applies to the trip to Bologna.

But it also works the other way around. If you’re traveling from Geneva to Paris, it’s much cheaper with SBB. The French would pay more than 16 percent with the SNCF. A trip from Zurich to Luxembourg is also almost 2 percent cheaper with SBB.
