There are many ways to earn money by renting private items such as cars.

Do you know Sharely or Locircus? These Swiss online platforms offer private individuals the opportunity to rent items of daily use to others. Lawnmowers, tools, hot tubs, tools – you’ll find everything.

Laure Eskenazi, founder of Locircus, explains: “There are many elements that can be shared. I firmly believe that hiring between individuals is a model for the future.”

Earn money with household items

Some of the most popular objects on the platform include hot dog or cotton candy machines that can be used to spice up a birthday party. But the best-selling is a textile shampoo that can be used to clean carpets or sofas: “The homeowner earned 1,000 francs with this last year,” says Eskenazi.

Users of the mentioned platforms are free to set the price they want. But how do you calculate a marketable price? Eskenazi: “You have to ask yourself how much money you want to invest in yourself. To do this, you must consider the purchase price, the age of the property and the frequency of use.” According to Eskenazi, since rental platforms also include a “solidarity aspect”, the price should remain affordable in principle.

The founder also states that this type of rental market is still underused in Switzerland. The high standard of living is to blame, i.e. the tendency to buy something yourself rather than rent it. In neighboring countries, people are more open to short-term rentals. However, paradoxically, the “ownership culture” is also an advantage: “Swiss people tend to take good care of their property, and this is a factor in the rental market that should not be underestimated.”

As long as it’s an occasional business, such as selling used items on Ricardo or eBay, income from renting items is tax-free. On the other hand, regular large-scale transactions must be declared as in the lease of property or living space.

Earn money with cars and parking

But money can be made not only with everyday items, but also with parking spaces: In big cities, many travelers are looking for cheap parking spaces. Anyone who commutes by car during the day or who has a parking space for an apartment in the rental agreement but does not have a car can rent out the parking space without any problems. However, the parking lot owner must be informed and accept this. You can then find your parking space through platforms such as Scan Park or Monsieur Parking. Price, maximum length of stay or specific periods of use can be set individually.

You can also rent your own car. Alongside providers with their own fleet of vehicles, such as Mobility, there are now platforms that can be rented from private individuals such as Weeshare or 2EM. 2EM was founded in Friborg in 2012 and today has almost 50,000 registered accounts and offers over 2,600 rental vehicles: sports cars, commercial vehicles or small city cars. “We saw a 30 percent increase in rentals compared to last year,” explains Youness Felouati, founder of 2EM. According to him, more than half of the investigations are related to weekends. There are also peaks in demand during the summer holidays and at the end of the year.

According to Felouati, someone who rents a standard car two to three days a week can earn 7,000 francs a year – and even more with a higher-end model. Meanwhile, the platform uses a tailor-made fuse solution from Basler Versicherungen. For each rental, this contract replaces the owner’s usual coverage, for example, in the event of theft or damage.

Some rental platforms also specialize in niche markets. For example Cast’Things: Here you can rent your house or flat, car and even your dog or cat for commercials or movie shootings. Directors and decorators can also look here for unusual costumes or decorative items. A special feature of this website is that it is free for natural persons, while professionals have to pay a fee for the contact details of the rental company. The site also offers tips on suggested price ranges. For example, for a large apartment, you may ask for 900 to 1700 francs per day.

But you can also temporarily rent out your apartment to tourists: Airbnb is still the leading platform for this. In many places, such secondary use is not yet specifically regulated by law and differs from canton to canton. In principle, however, the following rules apply: You must ask your landlord for permission and may refuse to grant permission if the lease involves significant disadvantages or if the terms of the lease are abused.
