That’s how high Mammut’s margin is for a 160-franc jacket.

This jacket is 160 francs in the Mammut online shop.

Swiss outdoor brand Mammut is best known for its products. But these are quite expensive. This gives the brand a golden nose. Mammut Sports Group achieved sales of 218 million francs in 2020.

An example: the jacket “Aconcagua Light ML” for women costs 160 francs in the online store. Mammut specifically makes money from this, but not the Vietnamese tailors. This is shown in customs documents issued by “K-Tipp” from July to November 2022.

Mammut imported the 160-franc jacket for 29.60 francs. Mammut’s margin is therefore 130.40 francs. However, margin should not be equated with profit.

labor and shipping costs

There are other costs in addition to import costs in Mammut. But to “K-Tipp” these are trivial. In November 2022, Mammut paid an estimated 1.08 francs per jacket for shipping. The report goes on to say that it’s still significantly lower today.

After all, Mammut pays his employees relatively reasonable wages. According to the annual report, tailors in Vietnam earn 300 francs a month in Mammut. The legal minimum wage is much lower, between 150 and 180 francs.

Comparison is not meaningful according to Mammut

The Aargau company explained that the comparison of buying and selling prices for “K-Tipp” is “not meaningful”. Several national companies are on the way from the Vietnam factory to the shops. There were costs incurred. The selling price also depends on supply and demand.

But Mammut isn’t the only outerwear manufacturer to benefit from such high margins. The Patagonia brand is also included in the customs reports submitted to “K-Tipp”. A fleece vest was imported from Patagonia for 160 francs, 12.95 francs. (kae)
