Low-cost airline Easyjet is opening a new business segment in Switzerland. The British are offering package holidays from July for travel from 2024. Meaning: You can book flights and hotels with Easyjet. There are 4,000 hotels in 70 destinations, mainly in Europe, to choose from. Flights depart from Zurich, Basel and Geneva. Easyjet offers numerous flights, mainly to Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Morocco.
With the new offering, Easyjet is attacking providers like Ebookers head-on. And it wants to grab customers from its powerful travel portal. “Millions of passengers fly on vacation on our planes. But our share of hotel reservations through our partners has been very small so far,” said Garry Wilson, CEO of Easyjet Holidays subsidiary.
Switzerland plays a special role
After a test in the UK domestic market, Switzerland is only the second country to have a combined offer. Compared to other European countries, Switzerland plays a special role in the airline’s network, according to Wilson.
Easyjet offers different categories: “Family”, “Adults” or “Undiscovered” for beach holidays. “Lux” or “Boutique” for city breaks. The airline wants to appeal to a variety of customer segments. Surprisingly, travelers prefer luxury 4 and 5 star hotels when they arrive at their resorts, even though they fly low-cost airlines.
Great market power
Accommodation can be offered at advantageous conditions thanks to the market power of Easyjet, which purchases large quotas. If you only book hotels, you almost always pay more.
Package tours are on the rise again. According to a survey by Easyjet, more than 70 percent of Swiss believe it saves time and is less stressful than booking individual items of the holiday program separately. (be)
