Musk wants to boost Tesla business with ads

Electric car maker Tesla traditionally does it ad-free, but CEO Elon Musk now wants to break this line. “We’re going to try some commercials and see how it goes,” Musk said in Texas on Tuesday. (archive image)

Given the high demand, Tesla didn’t need paid ads for long. Musk used his own popularity and other tools as marketing tools – first of all, Twitter, the online platform he has since taken over. But that seems to be running out — this year Tesla has lowered prices several times.

Musk told US broadcaster CNBC after Tesla’s shareholders meeting in Austin, Texas, that Tesla has no mature plans for advertising yet. “I have accepted that, there is no complete strategy yet.” But paid ads could be a way for Tesla to expand its customer base. The e-car pioneer is pursuing ambitious growth targets, but the competition is heating up. There is also the threat of economic headwinds. Musk said even Tesla isn’t “immune” to recession risks. A challenging economic environment awaits in the next twelve months.
