In the future, the European Commission also wants to impose tariffs on low-value goods. During the upcoming customs reform, the 150 euro limit for goods imported from third countries will be lifted. (icon image)

The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported on Monday. The Commission expects this to generate additional revenue of 750 million euros per year. Customs revenues go directly to the EU budget.

Until now, customers in the EU domestic market have only paid import sales tax for goods with a value of less than 150 Euros, but not customs duty. According to the report, the Commission will present its plans for the change on Wednesday. It is therefore part of a reform that also envisages the creation of a new EU customs office by 2028.

Referring to the proposed law, “SZ” reported that the competent authority should establish, maintain and maintain a new “data center” for better information flow among member states and facilitating customs procedures. This should gradually replace the 27 different IT systems in Member States with a centralized one.

According to the “SZ” in the Commission proposal, the aim is “an EU-wide overview of the entire supply chain in real time”. “The current customs union administrative framework is not clear and does not reflect the evolution of customs since 1968.”

The European Customs Union has existed for 55 years. While national customs authorities apply the same tariffs to goods imported from third countries outside the EU in the same way, they no longer charge internally any customs duties. However, not all authorities are informed at once about suspicious shipments of goods and illegal imports, and the European customs system is very inconsistent. The Commission wants to fix this with reform.
