Ikea is asking 10,774 francs for 50 paper napkins!

Sonja Baschung (34) from Pratteln BL likes to go shopping with her partner at Ikea on weekends. Also last weekend. “While we’re there, I’ll cover myself with napkins,” she thinks. And enough.

Pack of 50 white napkins costs CHF 1.50. It’s a bargain. Actually! Because Baschung wanted to pay with the new Ikea app. He scanned the barcode accordingly. Asked to use the app to pay for napkins at checkout.

“Luckily I checked the price”

Then this! 50 paper napkins are said to cost 10,774 francs. A truly flattering price. Baschung noticed this immediately, too. “I almost passed out when I saw the price!” Fortunately, he had a girlfriend with him. “He normally paid for me at the checkout,” he says. So normal CHF 1.50 for 50 napkins. And not the CHF 10,774 claimed by Ikea in the app.

“Fortunately, I checked the price in the app,” he tells Blick. “Otherwise the money would be gone now!”

The browser is not reading the code correctly

Having a problem with Ikea’s app and Shop & Go feature? “No,” Ikea says. However: “Although it is extremely rare, it can happen that a scanner does not correctly read the barcode on the product or does not correctly transmit the relevant information on the back of the barcode.”

Customers usually notice this very quickly and can easily delete and rescan the affected item. It then goes on to say for the correct price to be displayed. So far, there has been no negative feedback regarding the Shop & Go functionality of the app. (pbe)
